A dog and two cats lost their lives in a fire Saturday at a home off Ormsby Avenue in Caldwell.

Caldwell Fire said no one was home when they responded around 2:15 p.m., except the pets which could not be resuscitated.

A dog in the backyard did survive unharmed.

Five fire crews fought the flames aggressively to keep them mostly in the kitchen area, but smoke still damaged much of the house.

Fire crews credit the limited fire damage in the home to most the doors being closed.

Safety tip: closed doors can reduce the fire growth, limit damage to the home, keep temperatures down and can even save your life if you become trapped!

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
