Joe Burrow and Cool have been synonyms this NFL postseason. Burrow’s iconic ‘cigar celebration’ has drummed up quite a buzz. His cigar celebration first went viral when LSU won the National Championship back in 2019.

The Bengals’ QB also lit up cigars when they won the AFC North and later on defeated the Chiefs in the AFC title game to advance to the Super Bowl. However, that isn’t the start of Burrow’s cigar celebration, it dates back all the way to the ’60s.

Joe Burrow’s cigar celebration is a part of his family’s tradition

Joe’s grandfather, James Burrow is the real cigar smoker of the family. James starred as a point guard at Mississippi State in the early 1950s and later became a high school basketball coach known for two things: ball and cigars. Jimmy, Joe’s father was dressed up like his father James for a newspaper portrait — he wore a V-neck sweater, rolled-up jeans, a basketball under one foot, and a lit cigar in hand.

Years later, Jimmy and his wife Robin continued the family tradition and dressed up young Joe to recreate the image. Jimmy had kept this family heirloom private until last week when he revealed the pictures via Sports Illustrated. Jimmy’s oldest son James inherited his grandfather’s cigar-smoking gene. He’s an avid smoker of Oliva Churchill Blondes, Jamie claims to have given Joe his first cigar after LSU beat Alabama in Tuscaloosa in 2019, but his little brother didn’t smoke it.

Turns out Joe isn’t a big cigar guy! When Joe’s cigar picture went viral after LSU’s victory, Jamie found it weird. “I didn’t know you smoked cigars,” he said to Joe. “I don’t,” Joe told him. “That was my first one.” Jimmy and Robin were worried they were bad parents for asking their little boy to smile for a photo holding a cigar. Turns out it was all meant to be.

The cigar has now become a part of Joe Burrow — it represents his coolness on the field, his swagger, and a symbol of his success. So, now at least we got to know how cigar came to be a part of his celebration — It’s been passed down from generation to generation.
