'Just have a big LED'

CNN’s Jake Tapper on Thursday took a shot at rival media outlets for allegedly pretending to cover the Republican National Convention (RNC) live.

Unnamed outlets, Tapper remarked, covered the event using an LED screen to project a camera feed of the Milwaukee event.

We are here live, as opposed to some other networks that just have a big LED, who shall remain nameless," Tapper jeered.

While he did not name a specific outlet, Tapper’s comment aligns withreporting by the New York Times, which pointed out MSNBC anchor Rachel Maddow was not in Milwaukee during the convention.

“The arrangement — which several veteran television news producers described as unorthodox — has created something of [an optical illusion],” the publication wrote. “A casual glance at the screen would suggest that MSNBC’s top anchors were covering the convention in person.”

Still, MSNBC’s decision to place its Manhattan-based anchors in front of a live feed of the convention floor created some odd, and arguably misleading, moments,” it added.

Though MSNBC has been open about this fact, Former CNN Washington bureau chief Frank Sesno told the New York Times such practices could harm an outlet’s reputation.

“News organizations need to be very careful and very transparent about what they represent and how they represent it,” Sesno told the publication. “It can feel like a frivolous thing — oh, well, gee, we’re just using the pictures behind them — but there’s something profoundly important here. If news organizations don’t represent where they are clearly, then how is the audience to have faith and confidence in the actual content of the reporting?”

MSNBC did not immediately respond to a request for comment from The National Desk (TND). This story will be updated if a response is received.
